THE
ULTIMATE SETLIST SHOW -
CAFE DU NORD - SF 09.12.08 - DOWNLOAD NOW AVAILABLE!
On September
12th, Mother Hips fans congregated at the Cafe Du Nord
in San Francisco to be treated to a blistering
performance of one unsuspecting fan's setlist which
was submitted weeks prior. The band stepped up to the challenge by
performing some of their older songs that hadn't been played in many
years! The capacity crowd was treated
to a high-energy performance which we are now making available
for download exclusively here.
live
at cafe du nord is now available for download in AAC, MP3,
and CD-quality FLAC formats. Complete
downloadable artwork for print is included with this 3-CD,
3+ hour show! Click here for sound
clips.
Courtesy
of Jambase "This Friday was the prime example of why
it is a good
time to be a Mother Hips fan. The first word
went out on the Mother Hips message board The
Grotto months ago. The post was titled "Ultimate Setlist
Show." The idea was that fans build their dream setlist and
submit it to The Mother Hips. The band would then pick a setlist
at random and play it in its entirety. There were few criteria:
the list could not be more than 36 songs, it needed to be two
sets and the band had to have played all of the songs in the
show at least once over its near two decade long history. There
was no real publicity, but word spread from The Grotto like
the tendrils of a grapevine. Those of us that needed to be
at the Café du Nord that night would get there. Fans
that spanned the band's full history gathered and discussed
the impressive possibilities of this "ultimate" idea. No matter
whose list was chosen, it would be an epic show." - Review

LIMITED
EDITION SPLIT 7-inch VINYL w/ UK's THE BEES |
|
Camera
Records is proud to release a split 7" vinyl single on April
22 from two acclaimed bands: Isle
of Wight’s Mercury prize-nominated The
Bees (also known as "A
Band of Bees" in America) and esteemed California quartet The
Mother Hips. The single offers two brand new tracks, "Papa
Echo" by The
Bees and "Childish Dreams" by The Mother Hips. The
release marks the first studio recordings since 2007’s Octopus by
The Bees and Kiss
The Crystal Flake by The Mother Hips.
The record is a must have for afficionados who truly appreciate
the psychedelic-70’s-power-pop movement.
“Papa
Echo” from The Bees swirls their well-known
psychedelia with blazing Latin-jazz and salsa rhythms. Side
AA’s "Childish Dreams" from The Mother Hips brings a fresh
punch to the bands' repertoire, "melding heady Revolver-era
vocals with Zombies-esque pop." The antique green sleeve
was screen-printed in NYC with hand-drawn lettering by Hugh Miller
Surratt, the resident poster artist at Michigan State University
from 1970-1975, drawing posters for Miles Davis, The Byrds, Frank
Zappa, and The Grateful Dead, among others.
Orders
are being taken now. All orders received a free download of
each track within 24 hours of placing the order. This is a limited
edition release and these songs will not be available to download
individually without purchasing the vinyl. These tracks will not
be available via iTunes or any other digital distribution retailer.

DOWNLOAD: A FAREWELL TO THE SWEETWATER
On
September 22nd, after failing to reach an agreement for a new lease
with the building's owners, the Sweetwater
Saloon sadly closed its doors after 33 years. Some of the musicians
who graced the historic Sweetwater stage were John Lee Hooker, Mose
Allison, Jerry Garcia, Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt and Elvis Costello to
name just a few. For such a sad occassion, what better way to celebrate
the venue's prestigious heritage than to have The Mother Hips play
the final official show there! Sweetwater
Saloon - Mill Valley, CA 9/22/07 is now available here in its entirety
for download in AAC, MP3,

The Crystal Flake reintroduces

“Many things have come our way,” said
singer/guitarist Greg Loiacono. “Opportunities, challenges,
gifts, hard times and misfortune. Kiss the Crystal Flake is
about embracing everything. It's about standing face to face with
whatever comes. "This album is almost like a debut album for
us,” explains
singer/guitarist Tim Bluhm. “It is very different from anything
we recorded in the
past. You know that saying about wishing you knew then what you
know now? Kiss The Crystal Flake is
that coming true."

BALL-POINT
BIRDS - TWO DISCOVER
The long-awaited
follow-up to the first Ball-Point
Birds release is out
now just in time for the holidays. Two
Discover utilizes the same formula
of sparse arrangements, beautiful vocal harmonies, and primarily acoustic
instrumentation to indulge our softer sides and tender ears. "The
records we make definitely serve as journals or photo albums of our
lives and this one is no exception," explains Bluhm. "Themes
include new homes, inter-personal challenges, physical time versus
psychological time, environmental concerns, magic, practical space
travel, William Mulholland and Alan Watts and even dinner-table politics." Loiacono
adds "We feel very proud of the work we have put into this record. We
have explored some sensitive territory and we found some unanswered
questions and some positive actions that have enhanced our friendship
and our musicality." Two
Discover is out now and only available here
and at shows. As
this is a self-released album, we could use your
help in getting the
word out about it. Please forward the ecard to
anyone who you think will enjoy the music. Pick up a copy at the
official Mother Hips Store! |

HALLOWEEN
2006!
For
the ninth time, the Mother Hips, also joined this
year by Jackie Greene on keys, celebrated Halloween with their fans
at the infamous Sweetwater Saloon in Mill Valley on October 31st. As
usual, the band was in full costume, as was most of the audience. Once
again, a great time was had by all! And don't think that the costumes
get in the way of the rock... Quite the contrary. See
for your self! |

Mother Hips have released their first studio recordings

and "Blue Tomorrow", plus two versions of
the live staple "Red Tandy", recorded at

Camera Records adds: "This return to the studio environment for The Hips
is highlighted by the songs
"Red Tandy" (which magically blends late
60's Bee Gees harmonies with early 70's T. Rex guitar-rock
attitude) and the Crazyhorse-influenced track "Colonized"
(which marks a return to the Rock, & dirtball guitar
licks of Part-Timer-era Hips.)" ORDER

BLUHM - CALIFORNIA WAY
Tim
Bluhm has released the most stripped-down (and pure)
recording of his career. Backed only by his guitar,
Bluhm recorded California
Way in just two two days in July 2004. Producer
Dan
Prothero happened upon the session knowing little
about Bluhm, and by day's end had decided to release
the disc on his own Fog
City Records, won over by the haunting collection
of songs that he calls a "love-letter from and
about a disappearing place." This Enhanced
CD also includes bonus videos
filmed in the studio, in concert and backstage. Listen
to sound clips here. (Real Audio required)
KQED aired a story on the new record on National
Public Radio's California Report (scroll down to
middle of page to listen).

TIM
BLUHM'S THE SOFT ADVENTURE EP / COLTS
Tim
Bluhm's second solo album!! Packaged on a single CD, The
Soft Adventure EP is a collection of more recent
recordings, while Colts
is his "lost album" from 1996. The songs on Bluhm's
new EP The Soft Adventure EP are crafted with
a bird's-eye view, flying over landscapes and swooping down
to inspect the details that make personal lives personal:
the humorous, the curious, the vulnerable, the sarcastic
and the earnest. Colts, which was recorded
on a four-track in 1996, chronicles a dark period that Bluhm
glibly calls his
"indoor lifestyle," and the subsequent escape back
into light. The songs are filled with longing, tenderness,
resignation and regret. The cd is available in the official Mother
Hips Store. |
