LISTEN TO MY SHAPES
Album Review

Finding an album that is best enjoyed with a set of headphones and a cold beer is a rare breed. While albums that fit the above criteria were easy to find in the 1960s and 1970s, those discs are so unexpected today that when one arrives on your doorstep, it is imperative to plug in the Sennheisers and break out a six pack.

Sensations’ Listen To My Shapes is one of those albums, rich with country-tinged guitar rock, sweet harmonies, and a set closing foray into a psychedelic wall of sound (the title track that closes this 11-track disc), that encourage the listener to plug in, tune in, and drink up.

“Incredible Man” is a harmonious rocker that sets the album up nicely and the band, made of musicians who previously were members of The Mother Hips and Cake, prove both competent and confident by immediately downshifting into “Slow to Show,” which appears to meander lazily, but is in fact, covertly focused.

To a large extent, the entire disc creeps up upon the unsuspecting listener. From “My Big Fame” to “Halving Me,” there are moments of magic and joy at every turn. Sensations’ Listen To My Shapes is an enlightening and entertaining journey that fans of 1960s bands like the Byrds will enjoy tremendously.
